The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Common Security, Josep Borrell, has highlighted the partnership between the EU and Morocco but has asked to move «from words to deeds» in matters such as the law against climate change or the energy crisis to «fulfill the commitments» and «make the letters written on paper become something that citizens can perceive in their daily lives».
The Vice-President of the European Commission has made these statements at a joint press conference with the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, in the framework of the two-day official visit he is making since Thursday to the Maghreb country.
Among the issues discussed by both in their meeting, Borrell acknowledged that they have addressed the allegations of corruption against some members of the European Parliament, to which they have been «obviously concerned».
«The events are disturbing and the allegations are serious,» said the High Representative, who reiterated that the EU’s position on the matter is «clear» and that «there will be no tolerance for corruption,» while advocating «waiting for the results of the investigation underway by the judicial authorities.»
Regarding the partnership between the EU and Morocco, Borrell stressed that it is «solid and strategic», based on «common and concrete actions» and that it has become even «more important» in the «difficult times» that Europe is currently facing, with «a war on its borders in the east», in reference to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
«We consider Morocco to be our most dynamic and closest partner,» Borrell stressed, while admitting that it is «especially dear» to him, and he therefore urged the sharing of a «more ambitious» vision of the agreement between the two that would allow the fulfillment of the commitments regarding the structural reforms that Morocco is facing with the accompaniment of the EU.
