The Iranian government is contemplating proposing to Iraq the creation of a «joint international tribunal» to try the death of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, considered the shadow architect of the Islamic republic’s international military policy, and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al Muhandis in a U.S. attack on Baghdad airport in January 2020.
The idea has been acknowledged by the head of the Iranian committee specializing in the case, Abbas Ali Kadjodaie. «If we can establish a joint international tribunal, the case can be brought more quickly before international forums. Fortunately, given the communication that exists between the governments of the two countries, this issue is already on the table,» he explained in comments reported by the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
The Iranian government this week accused the United States of blocking the investigation into the death of the general and of Al Muhandis, ‘number two’ of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a coalition of pro-government Iraqi militias supported by Iran.
It should be recalled that Iran requested in January 2021 the Interpol police agency to issue a red alert to secure the arrest of former U.S. President Donald Trump, whom Iran holds ultimately responsible for the general’s death, and 48 other people allegedly involved in the bombing.
The then head of the Iranian judicial apparatus and current president of the country, Ebrahim Raisi, stressed that Trump «will have to pay» for the «atrocity» of the bombing. The head of the investigative committee has further elaborated on this idea: «It is very important for the Americans to know that their move was a criminal act for which they must take responsibility,» said Kadjodaie.
