Hundreds of supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro have overcome police barriers and invaded the Brazilian Congress headquarters in Brasilia as part of a demonstration against the new Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Some of the attendees are now heading for the presidential palace, the Planalto Palace, and the headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court with the declared aim of overthrowing Lula and his vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin. Police are using anti-riot means, reports the Brazilian press.
The demonstrators had gathered this Sunday in front of the Army Headquarters, in the administrative center of Brasilia, and marched to the Esplanade of the Ministries, where the incidents took place.
Bolsonaro’s supporters demand the intervention of the Armed Forces and the arrest of Lula.
Earlier, the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, said he had been in contact with the governors to address «anti-democratic acts» that have occurred recently in the country in reference to the demonstrations against Lula’s inauguration.
«We want the law to prevail and no crimes. I am in Brasilia. I hope there will be no violent acts and that the Police will not have to act. The ‘seizure of power’ can only happen in 2026, after new elections,» he has argued.
