Latin America’s political leaders have come out en bloc to support Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following Sunday’s attack by Bolsonaristas against some of the country’s main institutions, in a common message echoed on both the left and right of the political spectrum.

The first to speak out on social networks has been the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, to call for the application of the Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS). «It is urgent time for a meeting of the OAS if it wants to remain alive as an institution and apply the democratic charter,» Petro posted on his Twitter account.

«All my solidarity to (Luiz Inácio) Lula (Da Silva) and the people of Brazil. Fascism decides to stage a coup. The right wing has not been able to keep the non-violence pact,» he has pointed out.

Petro recalled that his government has defended the strengthening of the Inter-American Human Rights system by applying the norms in force and extending the charter to women’s, environmental and collective rights «but the answer is parliamentary coups or violent coups by the extreme right».

For his part, the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has described as «unpresentable» the attack on «the three powers» of Brazil, which he attributed to bolsonaristas. He offered «all» Chile’s support «in the face of this cowardly and vile attack on democracy».

Also from Argentina, its president, Alberto Fernández, has expressed his «unconditional» support to Lula in the face of «an attempted coup d’état». He expects regional unity in the face of «this unacceptable anti-democratic reaction that is trying to impose itself in Brazil».

«Democracy is the only political system that guarantees freedoms and obliges us to respect the popular verdict. Those who try to disregard the will of the majorities are an attack against democracy and deserve not only the corresponding legal sanction, but also the absolute rejection of the international community,» he said on Twitter.

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has «strongly» condemned the «violent and anti-democratic» acts in Brazil, since he understands that they are aimed at «generating chaos» and failing to comply with «the popular will» expressed in the 2022 elections, in which Bolsonaro was defeated.

For his part, the head of state of Ecuador, the conservative Guillermo Lasso, has joined the criticism against «the actions of disrespect and vandalism» perpetrated against «democratic institutions», since they «threaten the democratic order and citizen security».

«I express my support and that of my government to Lula’s regime, legally constituted», Lasso reiterated.
