The foreign ministers of Mexico, Canada and the United States signed on Monday the Declaration of the North American Alliance for Inclusion and Racial Equality to jointly combat racism and discrimination.
Specifically, the head of Mexican diplomacy, Marcelo Ebrad, the Canadian Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, and the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, signed an agreement to promote respect for the social diversity of the peoples of the three countries, according to a statement from the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
During his speech, Ebrard affirmed that racism in Mexico is a relevant issue and that now, in schools, it is approached with a different vision.
«In the case of Mexico, racism is something extremely relevant, for a long time racism has not been talked about, there are many studies, now it is a very important issue, we have also reviewed our history regarding slavery that they never tell you in school,» said the head of the Mexican Foreign Ministry.
«Racism in Mexico synthesizes a lot of social inequality, gender and other inequalities, but mainly those two,» he added.
For his part, Joly asserted that in the society of the three countries «everyone deserves equal opportunities to succeed regardless of religion, gender, sexual orientation».
«As leaders of Canada, the United States and Mexico we have a great responsibility to combat discrimination and hatred in all its forms,» he added, affirming that we cannot change the past but we can work for a society with a «more just» future.
Blinken stressed that «everyone is better off» when people from U.S., Canadian and Mexican societies enjoy the same rights and equal opportunities.
According to the U.S. Secretary of State, this reflects a «fundamental» recognition that each nation can reach its full potential.
«The fight for inclusion starts at home. It starts in Canada, it starts in Mexico, it starts in the United States. In every nation there are groups that face discrimination that prevents them from participating in society,» Blinken said.
