Brazilian authorities have announced the arrest of former Minister of Justice and Public Security Anderson Torres, in office during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, and a former commander of the Military Police, Fábio Augusto Vieira.

Torres has confirmed that Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes has ordered his arrest and authorized the search of his home.

«I have made the decision to interrupt my vacation (in the United States) and return to Brazil. I will appear before the Justice and take care of my defense,» the former minister explained through his profile on the social network Twitter.

«I have always based my actions on ethics and legality. I believe in Brazilian justice and in the strength of institutions. I am sure that the truth will prevail,» Torres assured.

The magistrate, for his part, considered the conduct of Torres and the former commander general of the Military Police to be «extremely serious», since they could endanger the lives of the president, ministers and parliamentarians.

Moraes indicated that «absolutely nothing justifies the omission and connivance» of Torres and Vieira in the assault on public institutions on January 8. Likewise, he assured that the position of both is «appalling» because there was foreseeability of the occurrence of the violent events.

The judge explained that the former minister had the legal duty to adopt adequate security planning, a measure that was not taken, so there are «strong indications that the conduct of the criminal terrorists could only be due to the participation or willful omission (of the investigated authorities)», according to the file, as reported by the newspaper ‘O Globo’.

«The omission of the public authorities, besides being potentially criminal, is atrocious, because, in this case, the acts of terrorism are revealed as a real ‘tragedy foretold’, due to the absolute publicity of the call for illegal demonstrations through social networks,» Moraes has specified.
