U.S. authorities reported Tuesday that the death toll from severe winter storms in California has risen to 17.
California Governor Gavin Newson said that more than 44,000 people are under evacuation orders, while more than 142,000 citizens are without power.
«We are not out of danger,» Newson said at a press conference.
The drought-stricken state has received a sudden and almost constant onslaught of rain and snow, leaving a trail of destruction, as reported by local media.
«These floods are deadly and have now become deadlier even than the wildfires here in the state of California,» the governor said over the weekend.
The National Weather Service warned of a «relentless parade of atmospheric currents» on the West Coast, while U.S. President Joe Biden issued an emergency declaration.
