Portuguese striker Joao Felix will play for Chelsea FC until the end of the season, after Atletico Madrid, with whom he previously renewed his contract until 2027, and the English club reached an agreement on Wednesday for his loan.
«Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement for the loan of Joao Felix until the end of the current season. Likewise, the Portuguese striker has extended his link with our club for one more season, until June 2027,» the red-and-white side said. «From Atlético de Madrid, we wish Joao Félix every success in this new professional stage,» it added.
In this way, the Portuguese international puts an end, at least for the moment, to his turbulent relationship with Diego Pablo Simeone. A starter in seven of the first eight matches of the season, his situation changed radically after the defeat in the derby against Real Madrid (1-2).
Since then, he played nine matches as a substitute, a condition he maintained in ten of the twelve matches prior to the World Cup in Qatar. Last Sunday, in the match against leaders FC Barcelona at the Cívitas Metropolitano (0-1), he did start.
This season, Joao Félix has played 20 games, eleven as a starter, and has scored five goals and distributed three assists. In his 131 matches with the red and white jersey, with which he won LaLiga Santander 2020-21, he accumulated 34 goals and 16 assists.
In total, the Portuguese, signed in the summer of 2019 for more than 120 million euros, has played with Atletico, with whom he won the 2020-2021 LaLiga Santander title, a total of 131 official matches, scoring 34 goals and dishing out 18 assists.
«Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world and I hope to help them achieve their goals, so I’m very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge,» said the striker on the website of the London club, a team in crisis as it is tenth in the Premier League, ten points behind the Champions League places, but still alive in the top continental competition where it will face German Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16.
