Government of Canada sends armored vehicles to Haiti – MINISTERIO DE DEFENSA DE CANADÁ

The Government of Canada announced Wednesday that the Canadian Armed Forces have transported armored vehicles to Haiti to address the insecurity crisis facing the Central American country.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and Defense Minister Anita Anand said the Canadian government has responded to requests from the Haitian government, according to a statement.

«Today, a Canadian military aircraft arrived in Port-au-Prince to transfer armored vehicles to the Director General of the Haitian National Police,» the ministers explained, criticizing the «increase in violence in the country».

«We have made it clear that Canada will not stand idly by while gangs and their supporters continue to terrorize Haiti’s vulnerable populations with impunity,» said Joly.

The Executive has indicated that these vehicles will support the Haitian National Police «to combat gang violence against Haitian citizens that impedes the delivery of critical services and humanitarian aid.»

«As a strong partner and ally of Haiti, Canada remains committed to supporting the Haitian people in their struggle for a peaceful and prosperous future,» reads the letter, which emphasized Ottawa’s «diplomatic» and humanitarian efforts in the country.

The Canadian Defense Minister also thanked the members of the Canadian Army who participated in the airlift in which the vehicles were transported «for their dedicated service».

Joly, in turn, called on the international community to «follow their example» and «help the Haitian people to confront» the violence.
