Mexico’s National Guard, which reports to the federal government, will guard the capital’s subway system for several months in response to what Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has described as «out of the ordinary» incidents.
The most serious of these took place last week, with an accident that left one dead and more than 50 people injured, but in recent days there have been all kinds of incidents on different lines, including a fire in a carriage.
Sheinbaum explained that on Wednesday she asked the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for the intervention of the National Guard, which will be effective as of 14.00 (local time) this Thursday, with more than 6,000 troops in the subway facilities, reports the newspaper ‘Milenio’.
The head of the capital’s government, however, did not want to speculate on the possibility of sabotage, but promised that all incidents will be investigated. She has also announced that the authorities will decide on a possible budget increase in the subway depending on what is decided by a working group that has already been active since 2022.
