The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday reproached the head of Turkish diplomacy, Mevlut Cavusoglu, for the support shown for the peace plan outlined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Cavusoglu assured on Tuesday that Turkey «supports the plan» of Zelenski and acknowledged Ankara’s conviction that the conflict in Eastern Europe will end when representatives of Russia and Ukraine sit down at the negotiating table.
However, the Turkish minister’s words have not gone down well in Moscow, where diplomacy spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has expressed her opposition to Cavusoglu’s assessment, according to the TASS news agency.
«We are well aware of Turkey’s assessment of the so-called Zelenski peace plan. We cannot agree with it. Ankara’s support for this venture of the Kiev regime is unlikely to contribute to the search for optimal ways to achieve peace in Ukraine,» he has said.
The Turkish foreign minister said earlier that «Russia had said it was ready for negotiations.» «Zelensky proposed a ten-point peace plan. We, as Turkey, support this plan and continue our work», he added.
