Several Brazilian ministers from Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s cabinet have denounced Thursday that the discovery of a draft decree seized from the home of Jair Bolsonaro’s former justice minister to change the election result is part of attempts to carry out a coup d’état.
The Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, has assured that it has been proven that the objective was «to fabricate chaos to bury democracy», according to the newspaper ‘Folha de Sao Paulo’.
«As the investigations advance, it becomes even clearer the criminal objective of those who financed, organized and executed the acts of last Sunday», insisted Padilha.
«The coup attempt was premeditated and outlined in detail, but we are not going to let its perpetrators get away with it,» he has affirmed.
The head of Justice and National Security, Flávio Dino, has stressed that this coup attempt «has failed just like the attempt» of this Sunday, in which thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace.
«(This) emphasizes that what we saw here on January 8 was not something isolated. In fact, it was one element of a chain, a link in a coup movement in Brazil and that there were amazing preparatory acts such as this decree of military intervention,» he has stressed.
«And the gravity is obvious because this is unconstitutional», Dino assured in an interview with the CNN television network, reported by the aforementioned newspaper.
Likewise, the Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, described as «very serious» the «draft decree for the (now) former president to annul the election results». «Yet another proof of the coup attempt», he reiterated.
The Brazilian Federal Police (PF) found hours earlier in the home of former Minister of Justice and Public Security Anderson Torres, who held the post under former President Jair Bolsonaro, a proposed decree to reverse the outcome of the elections in which the current Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, won.
Torres explained that the decree to reverse the electoral result found by the Police in his home «was leaked out of context», since the ministers receive documents and proposals «from the most diverse». According to him, this draft would have been in a pile of documents that had been discarded.
The Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes issued this week a search and arrest warrant against the former head of the ministerial portfolio, after the Police pointed out «omission and connivance» of the Federal District security authorities in the control of the assault of the powers in Brasília. After leaving the ministry, Torres became Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District, a position from which he was removed after Sunday’s anti-democratic acts.
