Fellow Republicans of Congressman George Santos, newly appointed member of the House of Representatives, have increased pressure in recent days openly calling on him to resign over the cascade of lies he told on the campaign trail.
Santos has exaggerated or outright overstated his professional and personal resume, with a false Jewish heritage linked to the Holocaust and a mother who supposedly died in the September 11, 2001 attacks, among other lies that have come to light.
Republicans representing New York’s Nassau County in various arenas, including Congressman Anthony D’Esposito, called on Santos to resign on Wednesday, and in recent days the list has been growing. On Capitol Hill alone, there are already six colleagues calling on him to leave.
The latest to do so was Max Miller, on Thursday, who appealed to «the highest standards of honesty and trustworthiness» expected of a congressman. «It is not right to invent or lie for political interests,» he said in a statement reported by the portal ‘Cleveland.com’.
Santos, however, has ignored the critical voices of several of his colleagues, claiming that he was elected to serve the citizens, «not the party or politicians».
He has the veiled endorsement of flamboyant House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who has tiptoed around what is one of his first controversies. «The voters of his district elected him. He has been sworn in and is part of the Republican conference,» he told the media Thursday.
