Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski said Friday that fighting continues in the Ukrainian town of Soledar despite assurances from the Russian Defense Ministry that its troops control the town, located in the Donetsk region.
«The difficult battle for the Donetsk region continues. The battle for Bajmut and Soledar, for Kreminna, for other towns and villages in the east of our country continues,» he said in his evening speech, UNIAN news agency reported.
The region has been the object of intense fighting in recent days during which the parties to the conflict have offered contradictory versions, without it being clear who is in full control of this locality.
While the spokesman of the Russian Defense Ministry, Igor Konashenkov, has affirmed that the «liberation» was «completed» in the last hours, a spokesman of the Ukrainian Army in the east, Serhii Cherevati, has denied in declarations to RBC-Ukraine the version of Moscow.
The Wagner Group, an alliance of mercenaries linked to the Kremlin, had already considered Soledar taken a few days ago, but Moscow had been more cautious and Kiev had directly denied the loss of the locality, where satellite images already show the effects of the destruction.
