The U.S. Embassy in South Africa warned Wednesday of possible attacks in one of Johannesburg’s wealthiest suburbs this coming weekend, although it did not determine the method or target of these potential attacks.
«The U.S. Government has received information that terrorists may be planning to perpetrate an attack against large concentrations of people at an unspecified location in the Sandton area,» reads the alert issued by the U.S. legation.
The Embassy, which has not provided further details, has urged its staff to avoid crowds in the coming days.
Johannesburg has not suffered a major attack in recent decades, although the country is under threat from the Islamic State group, which has warned of possible attacks in retaliation for South African involvement in counter-terrorism operations in northern Mozambique.
