The Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) announced Saturday the arrest of 32 suspected terrorists, including senior Islamic State provincial officials, during several operations launched in five governorates across the country.
The operations, according to the official statement carried by Iraq’s state news agency INA, took place in Anbar, Nineveh, Kirkuk, Diyala and Baghdad governorates.
Despite their territorial defeat in 2017, Islamic State sleeper cells remain active in Iraq and Syria. In recent months, the Iraqi government has launched several arrest operations resulting in the capture of dozens of suspected affiliates of the former caliphate.
