Former military officer Petr Pavel and millionaire Andrej Babis will face each other in the second round of the Czech Republic’s presidential election after obtaining 35.23 percent and 35.17 percent of the vote in the first round, held between Friday and Saturday.

Both candidates will face each other in the second round, scheduled for January 27-28, two weeks from now, to find out who will succeed the current president, Milos Zeman, reports Radio Prague.

Pavel thus wins by a narrow margin over the former prime minister and leader of the conservative ANO party, Sí in Czech and acronym for Action of Disgruntled Citizens, after 99 percent of the votes have been counted. Turnout was relatively high for a presidential election, with a 68 percent turnout.

Third by number of votes was economist Danuse Nerudová, who won 13.92 percent support despite being considered one of the favorites. The polls pointed to a disputed second place between Pavel or Nerudová with a view to face Babis in the second round.
