Zimbabwean authorities on Saturday arrested a total of 25 people following the raid on the home of MP Costa Machingauta in Budiriro, a southwestern suburb of the capital, Harare, during a meeting of the main opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party.
A few months before the presidential elections in Zimbabwe, several arrests have taken place in recent weeks among politicians opposed to incumbent President Emerson Mnangagwa, who is also running for a second term.
On Saturday, riot police entered the home of MP Costa Machingauta in the capital of Harare. During the raid, they also arrested another CCC MP, Amos Chibaya, who was reportedly holding a party meeting at the time, according to RFI.
JAC spokesman Fadzayi Mahere said that during the raid several officers assaulted the wife and 17-year-old daughter of MP Machingauta, as well as other detainees.
The police justified the operation on the grounds that the meeting had not been authorized, while the opposition party accused the government of using the police against political opponents, as reported by the above-mentioned media.
