The Peruvian Ministry of Defense has announced the opening of an investigation into the possible entry of weapons and ammunition through the south of the country for later use during the demonstrations demanding the resignation of Dina Boluarte’s government.
«We are corroborating this information, if there are indications and information that leads to this, the responsible thing is to corroborate this information and then take the corresponding actions», said the Peruvian Defense Minister, Jorge Luis Chávez, as reported by the Andina news agency.
Chavez has announced the investigation as a result of the declarations of a doctor who pointed out the existence of evidence that the deceased had wounds with characteristics of expansive and fragmentary bullets.
«This ammunition, unlike normal ammunition, has a hollow head that when it enters the human body does not come out cleanly, but fragments it and may cause death», he explained in the television program Panorama, in the Panamericana Televisión network.
«By virtue of this, the information is being corroborated, but this information was born from a medical diagnosis», added Chavez, detailing that he has also received information that points to this hypothesis from the Bolivian Deputy Erwin Bazan and the Chilean Deputy Chiara Barchiesi, according to the above mentioned agency.
Nevertheless, the Minister of Defense has expressed his «deep feeling, sorrow and pain», for the dozens of deaths registered since last December 7, when the former President Pedro Castillo was deposed by the Andean Congress after announcing his dissolution and the establishment of a Government of exception.
So far, the death toll is 42 dead –41 civilians and one police officer- and 531 injured –355 civilians and 176 police officers-.
