Turkish authorities said Monday that they have temporarily suspended shipping traffic in the Bosporus after a cargo ship carrying grain from Ukraine ran aground in the strait.
The Turkish Coast Guard has deployed several specialized vessels with the aim of refloating the ship, a 142-meter ‘MKK-1’ cargo vessel that has run aground off Umuryeri.
The crew of the Palau-flagged ship alerted that there was a problem at around 7.30 am (local time), according to information from the ‘Daily Sabah’ newspaper. No casualties or spills have been reported so far.
The strait connects the Black Sea with the Mediterranean. Ukraine and Russia reached an agreement in summer 2022 sponsored by Turkey to export grain and cereals through the Black Sea and the Bosporus. The pact ended months of blockade on Ukrainian grain exports following Russia’s invasion of the territory.
