The European Union condemned on Monday the use of violence in Peru by demonstrators and Peruvian security forces, calling for dialogue with all actors to overcome the current crisis in the Andean country.

«We deeply regret the tragic loss of life during the violent clashes and condemn any use of violence by the demonstrators, as well as the disproportionate use of force by the forces of law and order,» said a European spokesman in statements to Europa Press, on the nearly forty deaths since the protests began over the arrest of former President Pedro Castillo.

He stressed that investigations should be opened to implement measures to prevent further violence in the country and welcomed the visit to Peru of representatives of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights last week.

The European diplomacy has defended that the social outbreak in Peru must be addressed with full respect for the constitutional order, the rule of law and human rights. In this sense, it has indicated its support for political efforts to bring together all political actors and civil society to work «in a spirit of dialogue» to put an end to the spiral of violence and recover political stability in the country.

On Monday, Peru’s Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, defended the continuity of President Dina Boluarte, questioned for the violent repression of demonstrations, assuring that her departure «would open the doors to anarchy» in a moment of deep political and social crisis.

Otárola stressed that Boluarte «will not resign» because of her «sense of high responsibility» and emphasized «democratic dialogue» as the only way out of the difficult situation Peru is going through.
