The person in charge of security in Brasilia after the attacks on institutions on January 8, Ricardo Cappelli, said that the forces of law and order had to deal with «trained» professionals among the followers of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.
«They were confronted with professional men among the demonstrators. Trained and prepared people. People who had tactical notions of shock, people who had their own equipment to throw back grenades and people who almost killed a policeman,» said Cappelli, who put the number of injured officers at 44.
Cappelli said in the program Fantástico of the Globo channel that it is time to «separate the wheat from the chaff» and punish all those agents who were «accomplices» of the attempts of that coup mob.
In this sense, he pointed out that the Army headquarters in Brasilia functioned as an «incubator of plans against democracy» and that those arrested and accused for the events of the 8th had knowledge of the instances of the Planalto Palace and the Congress.
«The night of the 8th is not over yet. That night still has a lot of things behind it, a lot of history behind it, a lot of investigation and we will take it to the end», stressed Cappelli, who announced that the Military Police battalion in charge of the security of the Esplanade of the Ministries will be reformed.
Meanwhile, the investigations continue and this Monday the Federal Police launched another operation, this time in Rio de Janeiro, to arrest for the moment three people suspected of having financed and participated in the attacks against the headquarters of the three powers: the Presidency, the Congress and the Supreme Court.
The first detainee is a second lieutenant of the Rio de Janeiro Fire Brigade. It is Roberto Henrique de Souza, who became a candidate for deputy in 2018 for the Patriotas party — of Bolsonarist cut — and sentenced to repay 4,000 reais (730 euros) for misuse of electoral funds.
The so-called ‘Operation Ulysses’ is aimed at finding those responsible for the blockades of the main highways in Rio de Janeiro, as well as those who financed the mobilizations and camps in front of the headquarters in that city.
The suspects face charges of criminal association, subverting the rule of law and inciting the Armed Forces against constitutional powers.
