U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday declared a state of disaster in the state of Georgia due to severe storms in several counties late last week in order to «supplement state and local recovery efforts.»
«The president’s action makes federal funds available to those affected in Butts, Henry, Jasper, Meriwether, Newton, Spalding and Troup counties,» reads a White House statement.
This measure provides grants for temporary housing and home repairs, as well as low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.
The White House has reported that damage assessments are continuing in other areas, so additional assistance measures may be expanded.
This weekend, Biden approved disaster declarations also in California, on the west coast of the country, and in Alabama, a neighboring state of Georgia, in the southeastern United States.
In California, authorities have reported the deaths of about 20 people in connection with flooding or landslides.
