Russia’s National Defense Control Center reported Monday that one of its fighters has detected a German Armed Forces spy plane over Baltic Sea waters and near the Russian border.
According to the Russian agency, after detecting that the German aircraft «was approaching the state border of the Russian Federation» it was decided to send a Su-27 fighter to both identify the offending aircraft and prevent a border violation.
The Russian fighter identified its target as an Orion patrol plane of the German Army, after which it escorted it over the Baltic Sea, as reported by the TASS news agency.
«The flight of the Russian fighter was carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters without crossing air routes and dangerously approaching an aircraft of a foreign state,» the National Defense Control Center under the Defense Ministry stressed.
