The Minister of the Interior of the German state of Lower Saxony, Boris Pistorius, will join the federal government as the new head of defense, replacing the resigned Christine Lambrecht, who announced her resignation on Monday after being involved in several controversies.
Scholz had already anticipated that the changeover would be quick, in view of the key moment in defense policy in Germany and in Europe, and it took only 24 hours for the name of Lambrecht’s replacement to emerge, according to sources quoted by the DPA agency.
Pistorius, also a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has political experience and has already participated at the federal level in election campaigns and negotiations with other parties. From 2006 to 2013, he was mayor of the town of Osnabrück.
