Peru’s president, Dina Boluarte, has appealed for «peace» and «calm» from protesters on the day before the so-called ‘Takeover of Lima’, a large anti-government demonstration planned for Wednesday in the streets of the Andean capital.
During her speech at an event of the Constitutional Court, the president recalled that protests are protected by the Peruvian Magna Carta as long as they are peaceful, according to local radio station RPP.
In this line, Boluarte has «once again» extended her hand to the demonstrators who take to the streets «to express their demands peacefully». «We are here to listen to them», said the president, appealing for dialogue with the population opposed to her mandate.
In fact, the head of state has issued an invitation to meet at the Government Palace in order to know the main demands of the demonstrators, who after a brief pause for Christmas, resumed their protests on January 4.
«We know that they want to take Lima because of everything that is coming out in the networks. And I call them to take Lima, yes, but in peace and calm. I am waiting for them at the Government House to talk about the social agendas they have,» he added.
Despite asking the leaders of the protests to meet with her to address their demands, Boluarte is aware that among their main demands stand out her own exit from the presidency, the dissolution of Parliament and the calling of new elections.
In fact, the President affirmed that these demands are, at present, «unfeasible» and called for «working together» for the development and progress of the country. At this point, she also alluded to the political leaders, including those of the opposition, to unite in their call for peace.
Part of the Peruvian population has taken to the streets in different parts of the country since the dismissal and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo in early December after his frustrated attempt to arrogate more powers to himself.
