British MP Harriet Harman on Tuesday called on the UK Government to investigate the officers responsible for ex-officer David Carrick, who admitted to committing up to 49 sexual offenses over 18 years, remaining in his position within the Metropolitan Police (Met).
Harman, former Minister of Labor, has defended in the House of Commons that the commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police (Met), Mark Rowley, should investigate all those agents who allowed Carrick to remain in his post for so many years, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Guardian’.
For her part, the shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, has accused the government of failing to meet police quality standards, recalling the murder and kidnapping of Sarah Everard in 2020 by Wayne Couzens, who was in the same elite protection unit as Carrick.
Priti Patel, the predecessor of Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who conveyed her support to the victims during the session, also called on the government to impose new rules on the police, according to the Financial Times.
The scandal has reached the House on Tuesday after the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, acknowledged the need to implement a «real change» in the British Police. However, a spokesman for the Met has ruled out that there are investigations against any officer.
The same position is also held by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) – the police watchdog – which has ruled out, for the moment, initiating inquiries into the failings in the case.
Carrick, a former London Metropolitan Police officer, pleaded guilty Monday to nearly 50 sex offenses, making him one of the most dangerous serial rapists in U.K. criminal history.
