Former president Pedro Castillo has accused the Peruvian Congress of violating his right to defense and has assured that his intention is not to flee the country and that he has not renounced his constitutional right to «impeachment».
«I must conclude by telling you, your Honor, why do I have to flee the country, why should I have to request my exit from the country, where is the evidence (that) I want to flee? I have not killed, I have not stolen and I have not violated anyone,» he explained in a post on his Twitter profile.
In this sense, he has reiterated that, in case of «being accountable», he will do it in Peru, since he has «never» had the slightest intention of leaving Peru. «Because I have assumed and I assume the most important and sacred mandate that this people have given me as president of the Republic,» he has sentenced.
The former Peruvian president has also stressed that «during the vacancy process in Congress there was no impeachment». «Nor was I granted the right to a defense, as required by Peruvian law,» he said.
Castillo has been incarcerated in Barbadillo prison, in Ate, on the outskirts of Lima, since December 17 after the Judiciary ordered 18 months of preventive detention against him while he is investigated for allegedly committing crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and disturbance of the public tranquility.
