Vietnam’s Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan has been appointed Wednesday as the country’s new interim president following the resignation of the hitherto Vietnamese head of state, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, after he was implicated in an alleged corruption scandal.
The president of the General Assembly, Voung Dinh Hue, said at a plenary session held during the day that Xuan will remain in office until the deputies elect a definitive successor.
His appointment comes after the Vietnamese National Assembly approved the resignation submitted voluntarily by the president, according to the newspaper ‘VnExpress’. Vietnam’s Constitution stipulates that in the absence of the head of state, the vice president will assume his powers on an interim basis until the Parliament elects the new leader.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam accepted on Tuesday the resignation of Phuc, 68, who thus took responsibility for several «negligence» committed by some of his subordinates.
His departure comes on the heels of two other senior officials who resigned over investigations into alleged corruption in repatriation flights and in the manufacture of COVID-19 tests.
