The Jiber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly was dissolved on Wednesday after the Punjab assembly was also disbanded in a new political maneuver to force the calling of early federal-level elections in Pakistan.
On Tuesday night, Jiber Pakhtunkhwa province chief minister Mahmood Khan asked the governor, Haji Ghulam Ali, to dissolve the Assembly, following which the body has been dissolved under clause 1 of Article 112 of the Constitution, ‘Dawn’ newspaper reported.
This comes after the chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, an ally of former prime minister Imran Jan, signed a petition last week to dissolve the Punjab Assembly.
The process was finally completed on Saturday as Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman did not reply to Pervaiz Elahi. According to Article 112, the Assembly is automatically dissolved after 48 hours if the governor does not give the go-ahead.
Jan had intended to dissolve two of the four provincial assemblies to force early elections in the country when his party, Pakistan Justice Movement (Tehreek and Insaf) won the Punjab elections by winning fifteen of the twenty seats at stake.
