The Ministry of Security of El Salvador reported on Wednesday the arrest of Margaret Chacon, Colombian citizen and alleged mastermind of the death of Paraguayan prosecutor Marcelo Pecci, murdered in Cartagena (Colombia) in May last year.
According to the Ministry of Security, Salvadoran authorities initiated the search operation for Chacon after receiving information from INTERPOL Colombia alerting that «one of those involved in this cowardly murder entered the country (El Salvador) on May 26, 2022», just a few days after Pecci’s death.
Salvadoran Security Minister Guillermo Villatoro reported that according to alerts circulated by INTERPOL Colombia, the suspect may have been «traveling to different countries in Latin America», with the exception of Colombia.
«El Salvador’s INTERPOL made all the coordinations with the Attorney General’s Office and (…) we began to carry out all the procedures to proceed to the arrest of Margaret Chacon», Villatoro detailed, as reported by the Salvadoran Ministry of Security itself on its official Twitter profile.
The Security Ministry also reported the arrest of Wilber Geovanny Rodríguez Huezo, a Salvadoran citizen who allegedly helped Chacón hide from authorities.
Meanwhile, the Colombian press has reported that Chacon is the romantic partner of Andres Perez Hoyos, a Colombian drug trafficker arrested last weekend along with his brother. Both brothers admitted this week in court to having been linked to Pecci’s murder.
According to information of the newspaper ‘El Tiempo’, Chacon is considered as «the brain behind the murder of the Paraguayan prosecutor», since it was her who would have coordinated the attack against Pecci, and would have hired and paid the assassins who executed him.
Finally, Villatoro has asserted that the Central American country «will not be a refuge for criminals», thus confirming that Chacón will soon be handed over to the Colombian authorities «to answer to the Colombian justice system».
Pecci’s murder took place in May 2022 in Cartagena when he was celebrating his honeymoon with his wife. In addition to the Perez brothers, both in prison, five other people have been arrested, four of them already sentenced to 23 years in prison.
