The Venezuelan National Assembly, controlled by chavismo, has formalized this Thursday the appointment of the new ambassador to Spain, Coromoto Godoy, a «victory» for the government of Nicolás Maduro after a period of political bicephaly that the deputies have considered an «absurdity».

The plenary of the Parliament elected in 2020, in elections questioned by the international community, has held a brief debate on the appointment of Godoy, which had already been endorsed in committee and which comes after the appointment by Spain of its own ambassador in Caracas.

The deputies approved the appointment by a show of hands, after a couple of turns to speak in which legislator Saúl Ortega, of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), emphasized the «significance» of this milestone.

For Ortega, it is «a victory for Maduro’s peace policy», «a victory of the resistance of the Venezuelan people» against the governments that «in bad time» decided to recognize the «absurdity» of the cabinet of the opposition Juan Guaidó, who in January 2019 proclaimed himself ‘president in charge’ of the South American country.

In the same line, the deputy Óscar Rondero has expressed himself, who has emphasized that Maduro’s is «the only government that exercises power in Venezuela». The National Assembly elected in 2020 would also be «the only legitimate one», as opposed to that of the end of 2015, which continues to operate in parallel although without de facto powers.

Rondero has applauded that Spain has «corrected» its position and trusts that the mutual appointment of ambassadors will serve the citizens of both countries in terms of consular attention or bureaucratic formalities.

Godoy, who already has experience in other embassies, already serves as Maduro’s representative in Spain and has participated in several meetings these days in Madrid on the occasion of the International Tourism Fair, Fitur 2023.

Until this exchange of appointments, Spain and Venezuela maintained relations at the level of chargé d’affaires.
