David Crosby, former guitarist for the legendary folk rock band The Byrds, as well as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, died Thursday at 81 after a «long» illness, his wife told ‘Variety’ in a statement.
«He was surrounded by his wife and soul mate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us,» she explained, adding that «his legacy will live on through his legendary music.»
With bandmates Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke, Crosby laid the foundation for Los Angeles folk-rock during the 1960s in the Byrds.
The musician was also part of a rock group made up of Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, later joined by singer-songwriter Neil Young as the fourth member, thus adding his surname to the lineup.
