The former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, has asked the delegation of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which is currently in the country, to visit him in prison, alleging the need for the former president to explain the legal details of why his rights are not being fulfilled.
This was stated by Castillo in a letter published in his social networks and in which he requests UN High Commissioner Volker Turk to authorize a visit to the Barbadillo prison, on the outskirts of Lima, where he is «arbitrarily detained».
According to the former president’s legal team, other organizations such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) have not granted him such a meeting, which would undermine Castillo’s right to guarantee his defense and to denounce human rights violations.
«(I would like to) comment to this OHCHR Mission that our country is living a dictatorship under the usurper government of Mrs. Dina Boluarte in which peace has been broken in our country, since it has been used as a state strategy to send State agents to shoot citizens exercising their right to protest», reads the letter of the former Peruvian president.
Likewise, «arbitrary detentions», the criminalization of peaceful protests as well as extrajudicial executions have been perpetrated, listing more than 50 civilians allegedly killed, hundreds injured and detained during the protests.
«My client is a victim of this dictatorship established under the leadership of Dina Bolarte and the Congress,» Castillo’s defense team argues in the statement, which is why it maintains that currently «there is no rule of law in Peru» that guarantees the effective exercise of the defense.
Meanwhile, Castillo has reiterated the need for a meeting with the OHCHR so that it is aware of «all the serious human rights violations».
«I urge your honorable presence to establish contact with all the victims of this dictatorship that is breaking the social order and peace of our country, submerging us in the loss of life and freedom of innocent citizens,» he said.
«It is necessary that the High Commissioner Volker Türk unambiguously denounce before the Human Rights Council the systematic violation of human rights and request the creation of an international fact-finding mission to establish the facts», he added.
