South Korean prosecutors on Friday charged Park Hee Young, chief of the Yongsan Ward Police in Seoul, who has been indicted for alleged negligence in connection with the Halloween tragedy, a stampede in which 156 people were killed.
Park has been charged for committing professional negligence and causing the death of 158 when a stampede occurred during the celebration of a Halloween party on October 29, 2022 in one of the streets of the South Korean capital.
In addition, she is also charged with the crime of document forgery for allegedly trying to cover up the poor response given by her office that night after several people called to raise the alarm about the large crowds of people, according to Yonhap news agency. She was arrested on December 26.
After more than a month of investigations by authorities, police last week requested that Park and 22 other senior government officials be subjected to further investigation with a view to possible prosecution.
