A group of demonstrators entered this Friday the facilities of a mine in Cuzco, in the south of the country, to demand that the Antapaccay company cease its activities as a show of solidarity in the protests against the government of Dina Boluarte.
After a failed attempt of negotiation between the mining company workers and the protesters to prevent attacks, riots and the burning of vehicles and some areas of the surrounding camp have taken place, as reported by RPP radio station.
The Peruvian National Police have arrived in the area, although they have been attacked with stones by the protesters, raising the atmosphere of tension around the mine.
In view of this situation, Antapaccay, which was already a victim of violence in clashes last week, has announced the temporary stoppage of its operations after the new attacks, stating that they put the lives of its workers at risk.
«Our priority is the safety of our workers. Emergency and security teams are working to ensure the safety of employees on the operation, as well as to extinguish the fires generated. So far, no injuries have been reported,» reads a statement released by the company.
After strongly condemning these acts of violence, the mining company has asked for respect for the integrity of people and private property, and has called on the social leaders to dialogue with the national authorities to «put an end to the wave of violence that is shaking the country with a regrettable cost in human lives».
In the last hours, the Regional Health Management of Cuzco has reported 12 civilian wounded and one wounded member of the National Police, all this in the last clashes registered in the region.
Meanwhile, a group of people has also tried to take over the Alejandro Velasco Astete airport in Cuzco, although police authorities have been able to remove them from the area.
