The United States has decided to expand the training practices shared by the U.S. National Guard and the Taiwanese Army, sources close to the decision have confirmed to Nikkei Asia.
This decision follows the success of these programs in the war in Ukraine, where elements of the US National Guard are helping Ukrainian forces repel the Russian invasion.
Under US-Taiwan agreements, the National Guard has had training powers since about May last year.
Without commenting specifically on this expansion, Pentagon sources say the commitment to Taiwan «is rock solid and contributes to the maintenance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and within the region in the face of the threat from China».
«National Guard training would likely focus on improving Taiwan’s ability to leverage its reserve forces to greater effect in support of a society-wide military mobilization plan,» according to the same sources, in statements to Nikkei Asia picked up in turn by the ‘Taipei Times’.
