A commander of the Islamic State jihadist organization has been killed during an operation by Syrian forces in the southern province of Deraa, the Arab republic’s official news agency SANA reports.
The operation took place in the town of Al Muzayrib and killed the commander, identified as Mohamed Ali al Shaghouri and two of his bodyguards, identified as Ahmed Khaled al Masri and Mohsen Zitawi.
The assault took place against a hideout of the jihadist organization in a school in the north of the city, according to security sources.
According to Syrian authorities, the deceased jihadist leader was at the head of several assassination and bombing campaigns across the province since the organization’s territorial defeat in 2017.
Fighting between Syrian forces and the organization’s remaining cells began again in November last year following a brief evacuation truce in the south of the country, which is relatively under the control of the Syrian Army, albeit in a rather unstable manner.
