Three Municipal Police officers from the municipality of Chilchota, in Michoacán, eastern Mexico, have been killed after being ambushed by hired killers while carrying out a surveillance operation, authorities said.
The attack took place at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday near the road leading to the community of Huecato, reports Mexican newspaper ‘Milenio’.
The agents were carrying out crime prevention tasks when they were ambushed by a group of armed men who fired at them repeatedly, which started a shootout.
Following the attack, a security forces operation was deployed and the officers were found dead. The victims have been identified as Cecilia Villa Cendejas, Edgar Isidro Martínez Muñiz and Pedro Sosa Bautista.
Last Friday a colonel and six soldiers were killed in an ambush in the nearby municipality of Aguililla. The Michoacán Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into these events.
