The unemployment rate in Ecuador stood at 3.2 percent in December, which means that the country closed the year with a number of unemployed people 0.9 points lower than in the previous year, when the percentage was 4.1 percent of the labor force.
This is the result of the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC) of Ecuador. The survey shows a significant drop in unemployment since last October, when it stood at 4.1 percent, and 0.6 tenths since November, when it was at 3.8 percent.
Disaggregating unemployment by sex, the results show that women suffer a higher rate than men. While 3.5 percent of women were unemployed, the rate for men was 3 percent.
POVERTY RATE MAINTAINS The Ecuadorian labor survey also collects information regarding poverty, indicating that as of December 2022, the poverty rate stood at 25.2 percent, which is 2.5 points lower than in December of the previous year.
This figure is very different according to territorial area. Thus, urban poverty stood at 17.8 percent in December 2022, while in rural areas it rose to 41 percent, only 1.4 points below the previous year’s figure.
For its part, extreme poverty fell from 10.5 percent in December 2021 to 8.2 percent. In urban areas, the incidence of extreme poverty fell by two points, from 5.9 percent in December 2021 to 3.9 percent in December 2022, and in rural areas it fell from 20.3 percent to 17.4 percent.
