The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, on Tuesday called on Serbia to overcome the crisis in the process of dialogue with Kosovo facilitated by the European Union and to take steps towards normalization of relations with Pristina.
In a meeting with Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dadic, the head of European diplomacy took note of the intervention of President Aleksandar Vucic, who declared on Monday that «there is no progress in Europe if it does not cooperate» and accepts the Franco-German approach for an agreement with Kosovo.
«He reiterated the need to overcome the permanent crisis situation and therefore said he looked forward to a constructive engagement on the recent EU proposal on normalization of relations,» a statement from the EU External Action Service has reported, insisting that both sides «fully» implement all outstanding obligations under the bloc-facilitated dialogue.
Borrell and Dadic discussed the level of Belgrade’s alignment with EU foreign policy, as Serbia is the only Balkan country and candidate for EU membership that has not joined the sanctions against Russia.
«The High Representative underlined the growing importance of EU foreign policy alignment in the wake of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggression against Ukraine and emphasized the EU’s strong expectation of Serbia, as a candidate country, to support the EU in its foreign policy positions and decisions,» the statement said.
