Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva warned on Tuesday that «authoritarian temptations» continue today «challenging» democracy in Latin America and thanked the international support for Brazil after the assault on the headquarters of the three branches of government at the beginning of January.
During his speech at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires, Lula called for action to guarantee the triumph of democracy against totalitarianism, according to the Brazilian newspaper ‘O Globo’.
Thus, in allusion to the «anti-democratic acts» that took place in Brasilia on January 8, Lula thanked those who «have sided with Brazil and Brazilian institutions» for their support. «It is important to emphasize that we are a peaceful region that rejects extremism, terrorism and political violence,» he said.
Thus, he appealed to regional unity to confront inequality «in its various dimensions» and, at the same time, «guarantee human rights, respect for indigenous peoples and the fight against racism». «Nothing should separate us, since everything unites us», he stressed.
«Our colonial past. The intolerable presence of slavery that marked our profoundly unequal societies. The authoritarian temptations that still challenge our democracy today,» said Lula, listing the points in common that unite all the CELAC member countries.
Finally, the Brazilian president asked the member states for their support for the candidacy of Belém do Pará to host the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2025 (COP30).
