A group of demonstrators staged a protest on Tuesday against the president of the Supreme Court of Israel, Esther Hayut, to protest against the controversial judicial reform presented by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The demonstrators have gathered in front of Hayut’s home in the north of Tel Aviv, the Israeli capital, heavily guarded by a police presence that has also been present to separate the crowd from another rally in favor of judicial reform in the same place, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
During the day, there were also other protests by the technology sector in front of one of Tel Aviv’s main industrial centers, very close to the Defense Ministry. Specifically, about 1,000 demonstrators gathered to express their dissatisfaction with the judicial reform.
Israeli industry, high-tech, accounts for a large part of the country’s exports, so many protesters are alluding to the repercussions that the measure could have on the sector, as reported by the newspaper ‘Haaretz’.
More than 100,000 people took to the streets of Tel Aviv and other cities on Sunday to protest for the third consecutive weekend against the government of the new Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the most right-wing in the country’s history, as well as against the new reform of the judicial system.
Israel’s Justice Minister, Yariv Levin, aims to reorganize the judiciary by considerably limiting the review powers of the High Court of Justice and ensuring the control of political power over the appointment of judges.
