A Hong Kong cargo ship sank Wednesday off South Korea’s Jeju Island, with 22 crew members on board with Chinese and Burmese nationality.
According to the latest report, thirteen crew members have been rescued, while the Coast Guard – in a joint operation between South Korea and Japan – is trying to rescue the other nine people who are adrift in lifeboats, according to the Japanese agency Kyodo.
Most of the rescued people remain unconscious after the rescue, who could be transported to the Japanese city of Nagasaki, Yonhap reported.
The boat — with fourteen crew members from China and eight from Burma — was sailing in the sea between South Korea and Japan and sank 148 kilometers southeast of the city of Seogwipo, on Jeju Island, at around 01.45 local time.
Patrol boats and airplanes are searching the area, however, the strong storm – with blizzard and high waves – that is battering the region is making it difficult for the emergency services to carry out their search.
