Authorities in Germany announced Thursday the arrest of a German citizen at Munich airport for alleged treason for allegedly handing over information to Russian intelligence services.
The German Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement that the man, identified as Arthur E., was arrested after arriving in the country from the United States and added that «he is suspected of being an accomplice to treason» because of his ties to Carsten L., arrested in December 2022 for allegedly sending information to Russia.
«Arthur E. took the information to Russia and delivered it there to its Intelligence services», he has stated, before specifying that «the investigations have been carried out in close cooperation with the Federal Intelligence Service and the support of the FBI».
The arrest has taken place after that of Carsten L., an employee of the German Foreign Intelligence Service arrested on December 21, 2022 for allegedly spying for Russia. The German Prosecutor’s Office has specified that Arthur E. is not an agent of this agency.
