Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council on Thursday sentenced 14 people to death for their involvement with the 2014 massacre at Camp Speicher airbase in the city of Tikrit, where some 1,700 soldiers were killed by the Islamic State terrorist group.
The court has indicated that a sentence has been imposed «against 14 terrorists» involved in the massacre, according to a statement released through the website of the Council itself, which has pointed out that all of them had the intention to end the lives of the cadets and «terrorist motivation».
The Camp Speicher massacre took place in June 2014 after it was captured by the terrorist group, which killed 1,700 cadets whose bodies were found in mass graves after the liberation of the base.
In August 2016, the Ministry of Justice announced the execution of 36 convicted of participating in the massacre, although it later sentenced 27 more to death. In the aftermath, the United Nations denounced the executions and claimed that the convicts were denied access to an adequate defense, arguing that their execution was «fueled by revenge.»
