Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand announced Thursday that Ottawa will send four Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine «in the coming weeks», thus joining the allies who have decided to supply Kiev with this type of battle tank.
«This donation, combined with contributions from allies and partners, will significantly assist the Ukrainian Armed Forces in their heroic struggle to defend the freedom and sovereignty of their nation,» she explained at a press conference broadcast by the Global News channel.
Anand specified that the tanks will give the Ukrainian military «a tactical advantage on the battlefield» thanks to «their excellent mobility» or «their firepower.» «These tanks will enable Ukraine to further liberate its territory and defend its people from Russia’s brutal invasion,» he reiterated.
Also, the shipment includes ammunition, as well as training for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to operate the equipment in coordination with allies. «Tanks are not easy to maintain,» he has said, adding that, despite this, their supply will be «essential» for Kiev.
