The victims of Nazism will be commemorated this Friday throughout Germany, which will hold a commemorative event in the German Parliament with the participation of Holocaust survivor Rozette Kats, according to DPA.
Bundestag President Bärbel Bas will open the special event at 10 a.m., which will also be attended by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This year’s commemoration focuses on people who were persecuted by the Nazis because of their sexual orientation or identity.
On January 27, 1945, soldiers of the Soviet Union’s Red Army liberated the survivors of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp in occupied Poland. The Nazis had murdered more than one million people there, most of them Jews.
Since 1996, this date has been commemorated in Germany as Holocaust Memorial Day, with wreaths being laid at many places in the country.
Kats will deliver a memorial speech in the Bundestag, followed by Klaus Schirdewahn, also a Holocaust survivor who will address lawmakers as a representative of the LGBTQ community.
