Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday vindicated the role of the Soviet Union in the defeat of Adolf Hitler’s Germany and called not to forget the abuses committed then by the Third Reich, denouncing the alleged abuses of «neo-Nazis» in Ukraine.
Coinciding with the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, Putin has warned in a message that any attempt to «revise» the Soviet role in World War II implies «justifying the crimes of Nazism.»
«Forgetting the lessons of history leads to the repetition of terrible tragedies. Proof of this are the crimes against civilians, ethical cleansing, punitive actions organized by neo-Nazis in Ukraine,» he said.
«Against this evil» the Russian military is «bravely» fighting, according to Putin, who almost a year ago justified the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine on the need to «denazify» the neighboring country.
In Ukraine, the president, Volodimir Zelenski, has also paid tribute this Friday to the victims of the Holocaust, during a symbolic act in which he warned that «indifference kills just like hatred». «The more countries stop being indifferent, the less room there will be in the world for hatred,» he said, according to a statement from his office.
