The President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, has denounced this Friday that the Census that has originated dozens of protests in the strike in the city of Santa Cruz is being used to destabilize the Government and overthrow it.
This he said at the inauguration in the city of Trinidad of the technical round table made up of representatives of international organizations and indigenous communities, among others, which will seek a date for the holding of the Census of the Bolivian population.
«This political view of the census issue, unfortunately generated a political approach, since it was not only used as an instrument of destabilization of the Government, but also seeks to overthrow it», warned the President, according to statements reported by ABI.
In this sense, he detailed that the date defined by the technical table will be binding for the Government, clarifying that «it is not subject to negotiation» any possibility of marginalizing any Bolivian from the registration «because of the date issue».
«It would not be democratic or responsible to stop the census, therefore, and within the schedule of activities that we had previously defined and agreed upon, we convened this technical table, whose main reason is to discuss all those factors that will intervene in the conduct of the national census and determine the date of the population and housing census in an absolutely technical manner», he explained.
Previously, Bolivian authorities have called on the leaders of the civic strike in Santa Cruz to «be part of the solution and not part of the conflict», urging them to participate in the dialogue, according to the agency.
Bolivia’s so-called «civic movement» began last Saturday an indefinite national strike to demand the holding of the Census in 2023, instead of 2024 as proposed by the Bolivian government, since this registration conditions the distribution of aid among the country’s regions.
The protests are concentrated in the city of Santa Cruz, where the opposition to Luis Arce has greater weight and is the economic engine of the country, where one person has lost his life during the mobilizations.
